MakeMKV has both freeware and shareware versions, the MakeMKV beta version is a free dvd ripping software while the full version is shareware.

There is another free tool to rip a DVD called DVD Shrink that allows you to save the output as video files or as an ISO image file (that easily can be burned to a disc). This program can compress DVD data to standard 4.7GB DVDs.
